ARTIST STATEMENT

Given the fragility of all things natural, especially in this age of such dramatic global change, I attempt to capture photographic images which are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also capture the ephemeral qualities of nature.

All around us, natural processes are constantly acting upon and altering otherwise static forms, causing them to evolve over time in a unique interplay of pattern, texture, and movement.   This state of ongoing transition is not always readily perceivable by the observer; at a glance, the viewer sees only a brief instant in time.  As people go about their daily lives, they are more often than not in the process of moving from one point to another, such that they are apt to overlook the small intricate patterns within the broader landscape.

While the classic saying of 'don't miss the forest for the trees' is important, through my photography I try to encourage viewers not to miss the bark for the trees.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My photographs are the result of countless hours of painstaking dedication and attention to detail in finding “just the right” composition.

It is quite common for me to carry an additional 10-15 pounds of camera equipment when hiking in the backcountry – on top of the weight of the tent, sleeping bag, and all other “essentials”.  As taxing as this is, capturing beautiful imagery and being able to share it with others makes the effort more than worthwhile!

A tremendous amount of time is devoted to tracking down intriguing subject matter and composing every shot – each photograph likely involved 5-10 hours of intense in-the-field work.  To say that I am very particular about what I photograph and how I compose my shots is definitely an understatement.

I am a strong believer in getting things right in the field – and for that reason, the final framed images are typically very close to the original photograph taken, with digital alteration beyond the removal of occasional dust spots done as little as possible.

All photographic artwork has been printed on Epson Premium Luster Professional Photo paper, using an Epson Stylus Pro 7880 inkjet printer.  All photographs are matted and framed using archival quality materials including: acid-free rag mats, acid-free foam-core, and Tru-Vue UV-protective clear glass.

Artistic works are custom framed to best complement the individual piece.
